We cordially invite you to participate in the 22nd biennial World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) Congress taking place from 9-12 May 2023 in Killarney, Ireland. After a pandemic-induced four-year hiatus since the last congress in Brisbane, this congress aims to provide another innovative and dynamic scientific program allied to a unique hospitality-driven Irish experience in one of Ireland’s tourism centers.
WADEM has its origins in the “Club of Mainz” a group of 10 initially who met in Mainz, Germany in the 1970s which grew to 100 experts in the field which had yet to be termed “Disaster Medicine.” The WADEM Congress 2023 will build on the successes of the previous Congresses in Brisbane in 2019, which attracted more than 900 delegates.
With a theme of “Complexity and Continuity,” Killarney-based Congress will challenge the thinking of delegates drawn from all continents and from all areas of clinical health care, prehospital care, disaster medicine and response, emergency management/preparedness, and response and health administration.
The Congress will include over 30 tracks with high-profile international and local speakers, as well as a range of interactive and innovative sessions designed to maximize the congress experience creating a legacy for the future individually, collectively, and nationally through the formation of enduring links in an ever-shrinking world. The scientific program will offer a diversity of professional interests and expertise exploring innovation and best practices globally in emergency medicine and the health aspects of emergency preparedness, disaster management, and humanitarian aid.
Building on our collective experiences in the ongoing pandemic COVID-19 response there will be a specific focus on understanding emerging threats, their impact on our current and future communities, as well as the important role of technology in our preparedness and response efforts.
Preparations are underway and we anticipate an intellectually stimulating time, as well as an enjoyable opportunity to experience Ireland and its unique wildlife and environment. The Organizing Committee is preparing an engaging social program to give you the best flavor of Irish music, culture, and cuisine. The magical Kingdom of Kerry in the southwest corner of Ireland is a spectacular place to meet, inspire, engage and motivate delegates, the jewel in Ireland’s emerald crown.
Some of the wildest and most spectacular coastlines of the Wild Atlantic Way can be found here. With the iconic Ring of Kerry on its doorstep, delegates will experience both modern-day cultural treasures and a link to an ancient, mystical world. Star Wars fans can experience the May the 4th Festival in Killarney and visit “Temple Island” (Skellig Michael off the Kerry Coast) where scenes from Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi were filmed.
We look forward to welcoming you to Killarney, Kerry, and Ireland!
