Flavio Salio

Flavio is currently working at the World Health Organization (WHO) leading the Emergency Medical Team Secretariat and its efforts to provide strategic, technical, and operational guidance and oversight for capacity building, standards setting, coordination, and emergency health operations management to ensure predictable, timely, and quality emergency medical care is delivered in response to a disaster and/or outbreak.

For more than 17 years, Flavio has been active in providing strategic leadership to health programs and emergency response coordination for International and Non-Governmental Organizations in different types of emergencies (natural disasters, outbreaks, conflict/protracted crises) and country contexts. He played an important role in leading the development of emergency preparedness plans, rapid response teams, emergency medical services, trauma care, and field hospital setup and management. Deployments include the Ebola outbreak in DRC; the support for the design of the trauma plan and TSP standards in Iraq, Gaza, and Yemen; the West Africa Ebola outbreak; and the Nepal earthquake as Emergency Medical Teams Coordinator on behalf of the WHO, to name a few.

Flavio is also a faculty member of the European Master in Disaster Medicine (EMDM), involved in medical operations and health policy research and training. He has extensive experience in training medical personnel and emergency management experts in defining technical standards, assessing capabilities and designing and implementing strategies and operating procedures with respect to health emergency preparedness and response in complex emergencies and natural/man-made disasters.
