Improving global prehospital and emergency medicine, public health, and disaster health care and preparedness

Sang Do Shin, MD, MPH, PhD, FAEMS

Dr. Shin earned his medical degree from Seoul National University, followed by advanced studies in public health and epidemiology, culminating in both a Master’s and PhD. He completed his residency in emergency medicine and an EMS fellowship at Seoul National University Hospital. Since 2005, he has served as a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine and Hospital.

Dr. Shin was the founding chairman of the Asian EMS Council from 2009 to 2011, now known as the Asian Association for EMS. He has led the Pan-Asian Trauma Outcomes Study Clinical Research Network since 2015 and has co-chaired the Pan-Asian Resuscitation Outcomes Study Clinical Research Network since 2010. Additionally, he served as the chair of the Korean Association of EMS Physicians from 2017 to 2018 and has been the medical director for the national fire department since 2012.

Dr. Shin has directed the regional training center for the National Disaster Life Support program since 2008, providing critical education and training to first responders, EMS providers, and hospital professionals. Among his significant contributions to disaster medicine is developing a comprehensive nationwide mass casualty incident (MCI) database in Korea, which has covered all national MCI events and victims since 2015. This database provides crucial insights into epidemiology, risk factors, community and EMS response, hospital emergency services, and patient outcomes. Furthermore, Dr. Shin designed and developed the CBRNE package (including a disaster stretcher cart, isolation chamber, mobile CBRN detector, and network-linked PPEs) specifically for EMS providers to use in disaster scenarios.
