Improving global prehospital and emergency medicine, public health, and disaster health care and preparedness

Ilana Shecter

Ilana Shecter is a medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO ’24) and a US Army Health Professions Scholarship recipient. Ilana graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was an active member of the UMass community where she served as a Resident Assistant, Organic Chemistry Teaching Assistant, and held the position of Executive Director of the campus’ EMS Agency. In the Fall 2017 semester, UMass Amherst experienced a Meningitis-B outbreak that served as Ilana’s first exposure to organized disaster response. Ever since, Ilana has been dedicated to pursuing a career in medicine where she will serve in roles that support disaster preparedness and response efforts.

Previously, Ilana served on UNE COM’s WADEM Student Chapter board, where she worked with a team to build a mock mass casualty training exercise for pre-clinical medical students. Throughout the year, the group hosted speakers and workshops that provided exposure and networking opportunities to students interested in emergency and disaster medicine. Ilana hopes to use her experiences leading a WADEM Student Chapter to support others interested in building student chapters in their own communities and assist these students in learning the importance of disaster preparedness.
